The Organization
The City of Coronado is Accepting applications for
Maintenance Worker II (Temporary/Seasonal)
The City is currently accepting applications for Maintenance Worker
II (Temporary/Seasonal) in the Public Services & Engineering
Department (All Divisions). This is a temporary, non-benefited
position (not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year). Class
specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the
range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications
are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the
job.
Applicants for this position may be used to fill Maintenance Worker
II (Temporary) recruitments for other City divisions.
The Position
Under supervision (Maintenance Worker I) or general supervision
(Maintenance Worker II), to perform semi-skilled work in the
maintenance, construction and repair of City parks, beaches, golf
course, streets and related buildings and facilities; to operate a
variety of maintenance and repair tools and equipment; and to
perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of
responsibility.
The ideal candidate will possess customer service and interpersonal
skills in order to work efficiently and effectively with all City
Departments, employees, and service providers. This person should
be self-motivated, take initiative and work well as part of a
high-energy, goal-oriented Department. The ideal candidate will be
able to perform journeyman-level of golf course maintenance and
have a thorough knowledge of hand-operated and mechanical grounds
equipment including operation of large-scale mowing and/or aeration
equipment used on fairways, roughs, surrounds, and greens.

Minimum Requirements
Maintenance Worker I
Any combination of experience and training that would likely
provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A
typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:One year of maintenance and repair experience is
desirable.
Education/Training:Formal or informal education or training which
ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for
successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class B California
Driver's License with a safe driving record or the ability to
obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment is
required. When assigned to Fleet or Wastewater and Storm water, an
air brake and tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain within
six (6) months of appointment is required. When assigned to Golf
Course Operations, a Class B California Driver's License is not
required. However, a valid Class C California Driver's License with
a safe driving record is required.
Knowledge of:
Operational characteristics of various maintenance equipment and
tools including heavy and light power driven equipment, and power
and hand tools.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
General methods and techniques of maintenance and repair.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
Learn the operations, services and activities of the maintenance
and repair program in assigned area.
Learn basic methods and techniques of carpentry, plumbing,
electrical and painting trades.
Learn methods and techniques of planting and caring for trees,
shrubs and plants.
Learn methods and equipment used in weed, pest and insect control
and treating minor plant diseases.
Learn methods and techniques of applying pesticides and
herbicides.
Learn methods and techniques of landscape installation, maintenance
and reconstruction.
Learn principles and practices of golf course maintenance work
including maintenance of greens and turf.
Learn basic irrigation system repair and maintenance
techniques.
Learn methods and techniques of preparing and applying road
surfaces including asphalt and chip seal.
Learn methods and techniques of repairing sidewalks, curbs, and
related maintenance areas.
Learn methods and techniques of sign fabrication, street painting
and stenciling.
Learn methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the
maintenance and repair of pumps, compressors, sewer lines and
swimming pool equipment.
Learn building construction and maintenance methods and
techniques.
Learn the basic methods and techniques of maintenance and repair of
audio-visual equipment.
Learn methods and techniques of evaluating tidal action and
resulting effects on beach areas.
Operate a variety of maintenance equipment and tools including
heavy and light power driven equipment and hand tools in a safe and
effective manner.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted
in the course of work.
Learn and apply pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and
regulations.
Maintenance Worker II
In addition to the qualifications of Maintenance Worker I:
Experience: At least two years of maintenance and repair experience
in assigned program area.
Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training which
ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for
successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with a
safe driving record or the ability to obtain the license within six
(6) months of appointment is required. When assigned to Golf Course
Operations, a Class B California Driver's License is not required.
However, a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe
driving record is required.
Possession of or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification
within twelve (12) months of appointment is highly desirable.
Knowledge of:
Operations, services and activities of assigned maintenance and
repair program.
Methods and techniques of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and
painting trades.
Methods and techniques of planting and caring for trees, shrubs and
plants.
Methods and equipment used in weed, pest and insect control and
treating minor plant diseases.
Methods and techniques of applying pesticides and herbicides.
Methods and techniques of landscape installation, maintenance and
reconstruction.
Principles and practices of golf course maintenance work including
maintenance of greens and turf.
Methods and techniques of mixing and finishing concrete.
Methods and techniques of preparing and applying road surfaces
including asphalt and chip seal.
Methods and techniques of repairing sidewalks, curbs, storm drains
and related maintenance areas.
Methods and techniques of sign fabrication, street painting and
stenciling.
Basic irrigation system installation, repair and maintenance
techniques.
Methods and techniques of evaluating tidal action and resulting
effects on beach areas.
Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and
repair of pumps, compressors, sewer lines and pool equipment.
Building construction and maintenance methods and techniques.
Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
Perform journey level maintenance, construction or repair duties
within the area of assignment.
Perform minor carpentry, electrical, plumbing and painting
duties.
Safely and effectively perform herbicide and pesticide application
functions.
Perform confined space entry duties.
Operate a variety of maintenance equipment and tools including
heavy and light power driven equipment and hand tools in a safe and
effective manner.
Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
EXAMINATION PROCESSA completed City of Coronado employment

SICK LEAVE
Part-time, Temporary, and Seasonal (PTS) Employees who work for 30
or more days within a year, will accrue paid sick leave in
compliance with the Healthy Workplace, Healthy Families Act of
2014. Leave will accrue at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours
worked beginning on the first day of employment. Sick leave may be
used after the 90th day of employment and up to 40 hours in one
year.
